The payment, which is perhaps the most significant acknowledgment of the historical abuse and trauma suffered by Indigenous Australians since the 2008 national apology, is part of the federal government’s new $378.6m financial and wellbeing redress scheme for living Stolen Generations members.

The investigators considered the worst-case scenario would be if Aboriginal people were exposed to radiation from the mine contaminating bush food, water or air, and this exposure increased stillbirth and cancer rates.
