Griffin Theatre Company, in association with Force Majeure, will present a new work of Australian Gothic, Dogged, at the SBW Stables Theatre from 30th April to 5th June.


On the lands of alpine Victoria, on Gunaikurnai country, a story of familial bonds unfolds. Faced with the foreclosure of her family’s property, a woman is on the hunt in the rugged Australian bush—on territory that by rights isn’t hers to travel through.


From deep between the eucalypts, another woman—a mother dingo—searches desperately for her lost pups. Over the course of one long night, the Woman and Dingo forge an alliance to claw closer to the things they ache for… but it’s a dangerous deal to make.


Dogged is a bloody parable painted with electric movement, jaw-dropping design, and a story from Andrea James (Sydney Festival’s Sunshine Super Girl) and AWGIE-winner Catherine Ryan that stares you straight down the barrel. Integrating the artistic skills of designer Renée Mulder and Ngarigo artist Peter Waples-Crowe, the SBW Stables stage will be virtually unrecognisable to Griffin regulars with a floor-to-ceiling transformation of space.


Emulating an abstracted dingo’s den, audiences can expect to feel like they’ve burrowed deep beneath the alpine Victorian ground, surrounded by vivid paint, a dynamic stalactite installation and a large-scale, hand-painted mural that covers the walls.


Griffin’s Artistic Director and Director of Dogged Declan Greene said, “It’s a slightly intimidating honour to be shepherding Andrea and Cath’s magnificent play to the stage for the first time. Dogged is like nothing I’ve ever directed (or read) before. It’s a wild sprawl of prose, movement, poetry, visual art - bound together with a tough and steely core. I couldn’t be prouder to have it as our first Main Season show back in the SBW Stables.”


One of the two playwrights behind the play, Andrea James, commented, “The colonial history in this country is a hard one to truly face and Catherine and I haven't shied away from reality. The metaphors are huge and sometimes messy - as are the relationships between Black and White people in this country. To bring the fighting spirit of my grandmother's country onto the charged space of a stage has been so healing and I know that our audiences will feel some of the beauty of my country too.”
